EcoScore in the Vialumina system – how it is measured and rated

What is EcoScore?
EcoScore is a tool in the Vialumina system that helps drivers drive in a more eco-friendly, safe and fuel-efficient way. It gives you a score based on your driving style on every trip. The score is calculated automatically from data collected about the vehicle’s behaviour, and it is shown in the Vialumina app or on your dashboard. A higher score means better driving – think of it as a reward for smooth and responsible driving!

As a driver, you do not need to worry about the technology behind it. The system does the work for you by analysing how you accelerate, brake, corner and handle speed. The goal is to encourage habits that save fuel, reduce wear on the vehicle and increase road safety.

How is your driving measured?
EcoScore measures your driving style in real time throughout the trip. The system looks at the vehicle’s speed, movements and engine behaviour to identify “events” that can affect the score negatively. These events are only registered when they exceed normal limits for smooth driving – it is about sudden or unnecessary manoeuvres.

Measurement starts automatically when you drive off and ends when the trip is over. All data is aggregated into a summary score per trip or period (e.g. per week). You can see the details in Vialumina to understand what affected your score.

What affects your EcoScore?

The score is based on the number of registered events per 100 km driven. The fewer events, the higher the score (up to 100). Here are the most common factors the system looks at, explained from your point of view as a driver:

– Harsh acceleration: When you press the accelerator too quickly and the vehicle “jerks” away. It is registered as an event if the acceleration is too abrupt, e.g. from standstill to high speed in a short time.
Tip: Accelerate smoothly and gradually – build up speed step by step.

  • Harsh braking: Sudden braking where you press hard on the brake, often too late or unnecessarily. It can happen in queues or at unexpected stops.
Tip: Keep a safe distance and brake early to avoid emergency braking.
  • Harsh cornering: When you take turns too fast, causing the vehicle to lean or slide out. It is especially noticeable in sharp bends or at higher speeds.
Tip: Slow down before the turn and steer smoothly – “slow in, fast out”.
  • Speeding: Driving above the speed limit. The system counts each period of excessive speed as an event.
Tip: Watch the signs and use cruise control to keep an even pace.
  • Unnecessary idling: When the engine idles longer than necessary, e.g. during longer stops with the engine running and the vehicle not moving. It affects fuel consumption.
Tip: Turn off the engine during longer breaks, such as when loading or waiting in a queue.
Each type of event weighs the same in the calculation, but the score is adjusted based on total distance. For example: if you drive 200 km and have 4 harsh accelerations, that equals 2 events per 100 km – it lowers the score somewhat, but not dramatically.

How is the score rated?
  • Calculation: The system counts your events and compares them with a standard scale of “allowed” levels per 100 km. If you stay below these levels you get full points. If you exceed them, the score drops proportionally. The result is shown on a scale from 0 to 100 where:

    • 76–100 = Good
    • 51–75 = Acceptable
    • 26–50 = Weak
    • 0–25 = Poor
  • Shown in Vialumina: After the trip you see your EcoScore right away, together with a breakdown of registered events, which makes it easier to understand and improve your driving style.

  • Long-term view: Over time (e.g. monthly) a trend builds up, so you can see how your driving style develops.

Tips to maximise your EcoScore
  • Plan your trip: Avoid rush hour to reduce stop-and-go driving.
  • Keep an even speed: Use cruise control and adapt to the traffic.
  • Stay alert: A calm, focused driver avoids unnecessary manoeuvres.
  • Check the feedback: Use Vialumina’s insights to learn from every trip.

By driving mindfully, you can not only raise your score but also save money on fuel and reduce your environmental impact.
